A deeply personal milestone: Palm Bay becomes Brevard’s first ‘Purple Heart City’

There are certain honors a city receives, and then there are honors a city earns through the character of its people. This week, Palm Bay made local history, becoming the very first city in Brevard County to be officially designated as a Purple Heart City.

As a Purple Heart recipient and a proud member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, watching Palm Bay Mayor Rob Medina step up to officially honor us wounded veterans with this distinction was a profoundly moving experience. Mayor Medina is a United States Marine, and you could feel that shared bond of military service in the room. We are incredibly thankful to him for championing this cause, bringing this designation to life, and making sure our sacrifices are recognized. By taking this step, he and the city have drawn a line in the sand, pledging that those wounded or killed in combat will never be reduced to a footnote in our local history.

For me, the ceremony wasn’t just a civic milestone; it was a reunion. I actually went to high school with Keith Van Buren, who now leads the charge as the Commander of the Space Coast Military Order of the Purple Heart chapter 453. Seeing a guy I grew up with standing there as a fellow combat-wounded veteran and a leader in our community added a layer of brotherhood to the day that is hard to put into words.

Keith understands exactly what the medal represents. It’s not just a piece of metal and ribbon; it’s a physical marker of a life forever changed in service to our country. He also made sure the focus of the day remained exactly where it belonged. Keith didn't arrive at the ceremony alone—he brought over a dozen of our fellow wounded veterans with him.

Seeing those men and women gathered together was a powerful, grounding moment for everyone in attendance. It served as a stark visual reminder of the true human cost of freedom and the quiet resilience of the veterans living right here in our neighborhoods.

Being the first in Brevard County to step up and claim the Purple Heart City title is a milestone Palm Bay should be incredibly proud of. It sets a new standard for the Space Coast. Most importantly, it sends a clear, enduring message from Mayor Medina and the entire city to every combat-wounded veteran who calls this area home: We see your sacrifice, we honor your service, and you will never be forgotten here.
