A New Era Sparked: Shane Leech Takes the Helm at the Melbourne Fire Department
Here on the Space Coast, we are used to looking up. We watch rockets pierce the sky and marvel at the innovation happening right in our backyard. But down here on the ground, the true heroes of our community are the ones rushing toward the danger when the rest of us are stepping back.
This week, the City of Melbourne officially ushers in a new era of local leadership as Shane Leech steps into the role of Chief of the Melbourne Fire Department, succeeding former Chief Chuck Bogle.
For a rapidly growing hub like Melbourne, the role of Fire Chief is about much more than managing engines and answering calls. It requires a deep understanding of our unique coastal geography, the expanding infrastructure of Brevard County, and most importantly, the people who call this stretch of Florida home. Chief Leech knows this community intimately because he is a product of it—he went to Eau Gallie High, the very heart of Melbourne. His promotion to this top spot is a testament to his decades of dedication, grit, and vision for the future of our local emergency services.
A Career Forged in Fire and Service
Chief Leech isn't just stepping into a new building; he has been a foundational part of the Melbourne Fire Department for an impressive 28 years. More than half of his career has been spent in senior leadership roles, making him uniquely equipped to handle the complexities of the department.
His climb up the ladder includes serving as:
Battalion Chief
Division Chief
Deputy Chief
Interim Fire Chief (since July 2025)
Having spent nearly three decades in the trenches and the command center, Leech brings an unmatched institutional knowledge of how the city operates and what its citizens need.
What This Means for Melbourne
As Melbourne continues to expand—bringing in new families, businesses, and development—the demands on our emergency responders grow exponentially. Chief Leech is taking over at a pivotal time. Here is what we can expect as he takes command:
Community-First Leadership: A great fire department doesn’t just put out fires; it actively prevents them through community outreach, education, and visible engagement. Leech’s elevation to Chief signals a continued commitment to keeping MFD closely tied to the neighborhoods it serves.
Modernizing for a Growing Coast: With the Space Coast booming, emergency response strategies have to evolve. Whether it's dealing with hurricane preparedness, medical emergencies, or structural fires, leadership requires a forward-thinking approach to training and resource management.
Supporting the Rank and File: The strength of any department lies in its firefighters and paramedics. A leader who has risen through the ranks understands the grueling shifts, the emotional toll, and the physical demands of the job. Under Leech’s guidance, fostering a culture of safety and continuous training for the crew will undoubtedly be a top priority.
The Road Ahead
Stepping into the boots of the Fire Chief is no small feat. It requires balancing the municipal budget with the very real, on-the-ground needs of saving lives. It means making tough calls in the middle of the night and standing as a pillar of reassurance for the public during our most vulnerable moments.
For those of us at Queen Media and across the Space Coast, we rest a little easier knowing that the Melbourne Fire Department is in capable, homegrown hands. We owe a massive debt of gratitude to the men and women of MFD, and we look forward to seeing how Chief Leech will shape the future of the department.
Congratulations, Chief Leech. The Space Coast is behind you.
