Plundering the Kia Center: The Orlando Pirates Bring the Heat to the IFL

Welcome to the Queen Media Sports Report, folks. I’m Cody Queen, and today we are talking about the newest wave of adrenaline to hit the City Beautiful: the Orlando Pirates.

Indoor football is back in Central Florida, and let me tell you, it’s louder, faster, and more hard-hitting than ever. If you haven’t made your way down to the Kia Center yet to catch an Indoor Football League (IFL) game this spring, you are missing out on the most electric live sports experience in town.

A New Ship Sets Sail in Orlando

For those who might have missed the offseason headlines, the Pirates officially dropped anchor in Orlando late last year after relocating from Massachusetts. The franchise had already built a highly respected powerhouse up north—even capturing the 2021 United Bowl National Championship—and ownership brought that winning culture straight down the coast to Florida for the 2026 season.

The real masterstroke of the move? Naming veteran indoor football guru Rob Keefe as head coach. Coach Keefe is no stranger to the Orlando indoor football scene, having previously led the Predators a decade ago. He knows this city, he knows the passionate fan base, and he knows exactly how to build a team with homegrown, native Florida talent.

Riding the Waves of the 2026 Season

The transition to the 2026 season has been an absolute roller coaster of high-octane football. The Pirates came out swinging to start the year, proving early on that they belong at the top of the Eastern Conference conversation. We saw an absolute thriller back on April 13 when the Pirates took down the Tulsa Oilers 61-55 in a gritty overtime shootout.

Of course, the high seas of the IFL aren't without their storms. The squad hit a bit of a squall in late April, taking their first loss against Jacksonville (68-40) and then suffering a heart-stopping, buzzer-beating 71-68 shootout defeat on the road against the Green Bay Blizzard.

But if there is one thing you can say about this squad, it’s that they don’t stay down for long. The offense is incredibly explosive, and guys like Pooka Williams have been absolute human highlight reels on special teams returns.

Looking Ahead: Defending The Bay

As we look at the calendar, the Pirates are returning to "The Bay" (the Kia Center) this coming Saturday, May 9 at 6:00 PM EDT, taking on the Fishers Freight for a pivotal Week 9 matchup. It’s also Cancer Awareness Night, so expect a packed house, a fantastic cause, and a team incredibly hungry to bounce back and defend their home turf.

Here’s what to expect if you go:

  • Nonstop Action: The IFL field is only 50 yards long, meaning the game is a high-octane sprint from kickoff to the final whistle.

  • High Scores: If you like touchdowns, this is your sport. Combined scores easily crossing the 100-point mark are the norm, not the exception.

  • Fan Interaction: The dashers are right there. You aren't just passively watching a game; you are right in the splash zone of every massive hit and diving catch.

The bottom line? The Orlando Pirates have successfully injected a fresh dose of turf-pounding excitement into the heart of downtown. Grab your crew, head to the Kia Center, and get ready to raise the Jolly Roger.
