The Evolution of KJ Hamler: From Michigan Phenom to UFL Storm Standout
Here at Queen Media, we love a good football journey, and few are as fascinating as the path taken by wide receiver KJ Hamler. From dominating the high school scene in Michigan to setting records in Happy Valley, and now lighting up the scoreboard for the UFL’s Orlando Storm, Hamler has always been driven by one thing: the desire to compete against the absolute best.
Recently, Queen Media's own Cody Queen sat down with the former NFL wideout for an exclusive look at the pivotal moments that defined his career, his mindset on the gridiron, and his current pursuit of greatness in the UFL.
Chasing Greatness: The Move to IMG Academy
Most high school athletes would be more than satisfied with winning back-to-back state championships. But for Hamler, hoisting trophies at St. Mary’s Prep wasn't the finish line—it was just the beginning.
Despite his success with the Eaglets, Hamler made a calculated "business decision" to transfer to the prestigious IMG Academy in Florida. Encouraged by his godbrother, former NFL receiver Devin Funchess, Hamler sought out the toughest competition possible. He wanted to know exactly where he stacked up against the nation's elite. Leaving a comfortable, championship-winning environment wasn't easy, but to be the best, you have to play the best. That leap of faith solidified his status as a 4-star prospect and put him on the national radar.
Forging His Own Path: The Penn State Era
When it came time for college, the Michigan native had a tough choice to make. For two years, Hamler was a silent commit to Michigan State. The Spartans had offered him a scholarship when he was just a freshman without a single snap of varsity film. He had immense respect for Coach Mark Dantonio and felt right at home with the players in East Lansing.
However, as National Signing Day approached, Hamler realized he needed to leave the nest. Wanting to distance himself from the distractions of his hometown and eager to blaze a trail different from the state's other top recruits, he flipped his commitment to Penn State.
The decision paid off immediately. Hamler became a human highlight reel for the Nittany Lions. He shattered Saquon Barkley's freshman all-purpose yards record, ultimately racking up 1,658 all-purpose yards in 2018. He set the school's single-season kickoff return yardage record and cemented himself as a two-time All-Big Ten honoree. Happy Valley provided the exact stage he needed to showcase his electric, game-changing speed.
The UFL Storm: Team Over Stats
Fast forward to today, and Hamler is bringing that same explosive energy to the UFL's Orlando Storm. He's been catching passes from quarterback Jack Plummer, whom Hamler describes as a laid-back, goofy guy off the field, but an absolute businessman the second he steps between the lines.
Hamler’s recent performance against the Stallions on May 5th was a masterclass: 8 receptions, 113 yards, and 1 touchdown. For most receivers, a 100-plus-yard game is a reason to celebrate. For Hamler? It meant nothing because the Storm didn't get the win.
When asked about his massive stat line, Hamler's response was pure competitor: “It’s cool and all, but at the end of the day, we lost... In my head, I'm thinking I didn't do enough.”
That relentless, team-first mentality is exactly why KJ Hamler has found success at every level of the sport. The accolades and the yardage are great, but for Hamler, the only stat that truly matters is the one in the win column.
