The Versatile Weapon: Chris Rowland’s Journey from Undersized Prospect to Orlando Storm Star

If there is one word to describe Orlando Storm wide receiver and return specialist Chris Rowland, it’s versatile. In a professional football landscape that constantly looks for the biggest, fastest, and most highly recruited athletes, Rowland has built a six-year pro career by being the most reliable and dynamic guy on the field.

From his early days tearing up the turf in Tennessee to establishing himself as one of the elite returners in the UFL, Rowland’s story is a masterclass in proving the doubters wrong. We recently sat down with him here at Queen Media to look back at his foundation, his historic college career, and what is driving his stellar season in Orlando.

Where It All Started: Ravenwood High

Long before he was making professional defenders miss, Rowland was lighting up the scoreboard at Ravenwood High School in Nashville. Looking back at his staggering high school stats including over 1,300 receiving yards and 2,200 all-purpose yards it’s clear the foundation for his versatile playing style was laid early. Under the guidance of his head coach, Will Hester, Rowland learned to do it all: kick returns, punt returns, and lining up all over the offense.

Chasing a Legend at Tennessee State

When you talk about HBCU football and legendary receivers, the conversation starts and ends with Jerry Rice. But during his time at Tennessee State, Rowland did the unthinkable: he broke Rice’s single-season HBCU reception record.

Interestingly enough, it wasn't a goal he set out to achieve on day one of the season. It was the result of consistent, week to week grinding. When the math finally added up down the stretch, Rowland secured his name alongside a Hall of Famer who set the blueprint for every HBCU receiver to follow.

The Drive for 1,000 Yards

Fast forward to 2026, and Rowland is still putting up massive numbers. Currently sitting at 908 all-purpose yards for the season, he’s knocking on the door of the 1,000-yard milestone a feat he's accomplished and led the league in over the last three years.

For Rowland, it isn't about padding his own stats; it’s about doing whatever it takes to secure the "dub" for his team. Whether that means catching passes out of the slot or taking handoffs out of the backfield, he prides himself on being a Swiss Army knife for the offense.

A Perfect Fit in Orlando

A major key to Rowland's success this year has been his environment. He’s thriving in Orlando, not just because of the city which he’s been enjoying exploring, from the Magic stadium to UCF but because of the culture in the locker room.

Rowland describes the current Storm roster as one of the funniest and tightest groups he’s been a part of in his six professional seasons. Furthermore, the connection with Head Coach Beck has been seamless. As a "player's coach" and a former pro himself, Coach Beck understands the physical toll of the daily grind and has earned the absolute loyalty of his guys, especially Rowland, who Beck made his first overall pick in the dispersal draft.

Staying Humble and Hungry

Chris Rowland has never been the biggest guy on the roster, and he knows what it feels like to be handed the short end of the stick when it comes to standard football scouting. But his resilience is exactly why he is where he is today.

For any undersized high school players out there currently being overlooked by college scouts, Rowland’s advice is simple but profound: keep your circle tight, put your best foot forward, trust the process, and stay hungry. When you least expect it, the breakthrough happens.
