Zac Robinson’s Wide-Zone Transition: A Falcons Film Study
On the Space Coast we value blue-collar football and enjoy watching teams win on the ground, working for each tough yard and carrying out their plays in the trenches. The fact that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hired Zac Robinson as their new offensive coordinator last January was more than just them bringing in a follower of Sean McVay; it was them hiring an architect who is fully aware of how to design a physical, wide-zone rushing attack.
To get an idea of how Tampa Bay intends to improve its historically inefficient ground game in 2026, you won't have to ask someone on the sideline; you only need to watch the film from the time Robinson was responsible for play-calling with the Atlanta Falcons in 2024 and 2025.
The Atlanta Blueprint
His philosophy is based on the use of geometry, pre-snap motion, and the idea of carrying out strong wide-zone blocks. He doesn't merely arrange deep passes; he is planning out space. Evidence for this comes from his time in Atlanta:
During his two seasons as offensive coordinator of the Falcons, Robinson's team averaged 128.1 yards per game when it came to rushing and thus ranked eighth in the league.
His attack in this regard was ninth in the league in terms of yards per carry, at 4.5.
In 2024 the Falcons had 135 explosive plays and ended up in fifth place in the NFL.
In the two years that he has been calling plays Robinson's offense has had 247 explosive plays, which puts it eighth in the overall standings.
Trench Warfare: Wirfs and Barton
If wide-zone play is to be carried out successfully, your offensive linemen need to have outstanding lateral agility since they have to move the defensive linemen horizontally in order to create cutback lanes for the running backs; in this regard Tristan Wirfs and Graham Barton are the most important players on the team.
Robinson demands an offensive line that can protect the quarterback while maintaining a grinder's mentality in the run game. Look at how his scheme protected the pocket in Atlanta:
In 2025 the offensive line played by Robinson suffered the fourth smallest number of sacks, amounting to only 26.
During his two seasons with the Falcons the offensive line was only sacked 58 times, which was the fifth lowest total in the league.
The 2026 Projection
Robinson will simplify the reads for Baker Mayfield by having Bucky Irving and Kenneth Gainwell use their vision when they are on the perimeter, and this is a tough, demanding style of football that has been specifically designed for a team which is fighting back against the disrespect of the national media.
