The Grind, The Glory, and The Walk-On Mentality of Meesh Powell

What’s up, Queen Media fam! Cody Queen here. If you’ve been following the UFL this spring, you already know the Orlando Storm’s defense is playing like an old-school, smash-mouth unit. They fly to the football, create turnovers, and don't give an inch.

At the center of that defensive buzzsaw is Mishael "Meesh" Powell. We recently sat down for an exclusive interview to talk about his journey from a high school standout in Seattle, to a college walk-on, to the NFL, and now to his crucial role as a safety for the number-one-seeded Storm.

Here is a breakdown of our conversation and a look at the mindset that keeps him pushing forward.

Seattle Roots and the High School Brotherhood

Before the big stadiums and the pro contracts, Meesh was grinding it out at O'Dea High School in Seattle. Winning a 3A state championship is no small feat, and it laid the foundation for the competitor he is today. During our chat, Meesh reflected on the unique experience of playing at an all-boys school and how those early bonds—like his ongoing friendship and training sessions with fellow Seattle native Myles Gaskin—still keep him grounded.

The Ultimate Bet: The Walk-On Mentality

One of the most impressive things about Meesh’s story is his willingness to bet on himself. Coming out of high school, he had opportunities to play at Ivy League programs, but he chose the harder path: walking on at the University of Washington. He didn't just survive; he thrived, eventually earning a scholarship and becoming a starter. Even now, playing professional ball, he still operates with that "first one in, last one out" mentality. It’s a level of discipline that you just can't teach.

Navigating the Wild West of NIL

College football changed forever during Meesh’s time at Washington and his final collegiate season transferring to the Miami Hurricanes. The introduction of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) turned the sport upside down. It was fascinating to hear his perspective as a guy who was in the locker room right as the money started flowing. He’s candid about his support for players getting their rightful compensation, while also reflecting on how wild the timing was for guys like him transitioning out of the college ranks.

A Masterclass in Minnesota

After his college career, Meesh signed as an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota Vikings in the spring of 2025. While his time there was a stepping stone, he didn't let the opportunity go to waste. He spoke highly of the Vikings' defensive staff, specifically highlighting how they operated as true teachers of the game. Learning the intricacies of offensive tendencies, route concepts, and reads at the NFL level significantly leveled up his football IQ.

Bringing the Thunder to the Orlando Storm

Everything happens for a reason. In January 2026, Meesh was drafted by the UFL’s newest franchise, the Orlando Storm, and he hasn't looked back. Under the leadership of Head Coach Anthony Becht, the Storm have dominated the spring season. Meesh compared Coach Becht's winning, player-first culture to the environments built by his former college coaches, Kalen DeBoer and Mario Cristobal. With the UFL playoffs in full swing, Meesh and the Storm are locked in on bringing a championship to Orlando.

Cody's Take:What makes Meesh Powell a pro isn't just his physical ability—it's his unshakeable faith and relentless discipline. Whether he's walking on, transferring, or fighting for a roster spot, he never shies away from adversity. That’s the exact type of guy you want in your secondary when a championship is on the line.
